You may have noticed that numbers are also used in this article to tell us the day of the month and year it was published. Or perhaps you didn't even register those as numbers. Laid out in this format we simply read them as 'the date'. To us they have become the thing they stand for. We are no longer aware that numbers in a date are abstract symbols - familiarity has made them seem 'natural'. We live our lives surrounded by numbers like this: dates, times, temperatures, weights, prices, speed limits, which we translate instantly into something meaningful. And we translate so effortlessly that we no longer think of them as numbers that have to be 'understood'. Our minds leap straight to whatever it is they stand for.
